Obituary of Gertrude Kearney

Gertrude "Trudy" Kearney, 83, passed away on March 19 in LaGrange, NY. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on November 2, 1926, she was the daughter of John Kemmerer and Maria Spahn. She will be laid to rest next to Joseph S. Kearney, her beloved husband of 39 years, at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Trudy was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and St. Francis School of Nursing; she worked as an R.N. at St. Francis Hospital until her retirement in 1956, but kept her nursing license current and substituted as a school nurse in the Arlington School District for many years. She also tended to the myriad scrapes and bruises of the children who came knocking at her door for BandAids and a lot of T.L.C. in her neighborhood on Titusville Heights in LaGrange. She married Joseph S. Kearney at Holy Trinity Church on February 3, 1951. She is survived by daughter and son-inlaw Marion and Bob Quinn of LaGrange; son and daughter-inlaw Sean and Peggy Kearney of Town of Poughkeepsie; and daughter Margaret Kearney of New Ipswich, NH. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Caitlin and Patrick Quinn and Laura, Joseph G., and Tim Kearney; as well as a greatgrandson, Landon Kearney. Although she was petite in stature, Trudy was a strong soul with a big heart who inspired the best in others. During times of adversity, she reminded everyone to "have faith." She was an avid reader, often reading a book a day. Her interests ranged from history and biography to murder mysteries. She was also a passionate cook and enjoyed taking classes at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. She demonstrated her limitless love for her family by baking and cooking for them, including recipes that had been handed down to her from her German relatives and new dishes she discovered in magazines and at cooking classes.
