Obituary of John Lyons
John M. Lyons, 65, a longtime resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, formerly a 30 year resident of Hopewell Junction, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Mr. Lyons was employed by the Local 3 (IBEW) and New York Elevator as an Electrician for 41 years, retiring in November 2004. He was a parishioner of St. Columba Church, Hopewell Junction and Holy Trinity Church, Poughkeepsie. Mr. Lyons served his country in the United States Army. An avid bowler, he played on the Horsemen 4 Team. He also enjoyed playing pool and cards. He loved to travel and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a wonderful husband, devoted father, lovable brother, grandfather, uncle, and true friend. Born in Manhattan, NY on July 17, 1944, he was the son of the late John M. Lyons, Sr. and Margaret Nash Lyons. He attended the New York Metal and Trade school. On April 12, 1969 he married Karen A. Tafelmeier at Holy Rosary Church, Bronx, NY. Mrs. Lyons survives at home. In addition to his wife of 40 years, he was the proud father of his two children, Kerrie Lynn Glassman and her husband, Josh, of Newtown, CT and Jason (Smokey) M. Lyons of Poughkeepsie; sisters, Veronica Santolo of Mt. Vernon, NY and Joan Regan and her husband, Joseph, of Southberry, CT; sisters-in-law, Alice Stuart and her husband, Ron, of Riverside, CT and Linda Cummings of West Babylon, LI; brother-in-law, George Tafelmeier of Riverdale, NY; beautiful grandchildren, Eleanor and Jack; several nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and grand-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Peter. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 4 to 8 pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 7, 2009, 10am, at St. Columba Church, Rt. 82, Hopewell Junction. Entombment will be in St. Peter's Mausoleum with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hudson Valley Region, 2678 South Rd., Suite 102, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 103, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
