Obituary of Irving Matthews

Irving A. (Buddy) Matthews, age 92, a resident for 46 years, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 after a long illness, at St. Luke's Hospital of Newburgh, NY. Mr. Matthews was born July 11, 1917 in Hempstead, LI. He is the son of the late Irving A. and the late Christine Matthews. Buddy Graduated from Hempstead High School in 1935. He served in the United States Army, worked on Wall Street, Grumman’s and Republic Aviation on Long Island before moving to Poughkeepsie in 1964. He was employed by IBM Poughkeepsie as a machinist/toolmaker from 1964 through his retirement in 1983. Buddy was an avid saxophone player and member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Poughkeepsie. Buddy married Anna M. Hand on March 21, 1943. Anna Predeceased Buddy October 1, 2008. They were blessed with three loving and caring daughters, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Buddy is survived by his three daughters, Karen Giarrusso-Ogden and Dave Ogden of New Windsor NY, Christine Green of Beacon NY, Barbara and Jack Altman of Poughkeepsie NY, four grandchildren and spouses Dawn and Danny Green of Hyde Park NY, Brett and Cheryl Green of Phoenix AZ, Heather and Brad Finelli of Swanton VT and Kara and Daniel Koehler of Poughkeepsie; Six Great Grandchildren Melissa Freytag-Green, Avery, Madison and Jacob Finelli, Alexis Green and Cadence Koehler. Buddy was also predeceased by a sister Lois Baldwin Calling hours will be Sunday, June 27, 2010 from 2 to 4 at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. The funeral service will follow visitation at 4:00 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
