Obituary of William Smith
William H. "Pop-Sweetie" Smith, age 85, of the Town of Poughkeepsie died Sunday, September 19, 2010 at home, in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Smith was born November 21, 1924 in Poughkeepsie, NY; he was the son of the late John R. and the late Caroline W. (Winfield) Smith. He married Katherine Janson on September 21, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Poughkeepsie NY. On September 21, 2010, Bill and Kay would have celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary. Bill served in the Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1945 where he was a tail gunner in a B17 on the Eastern Front during WWII. He retired from R & W Smith Plumbing & Heating in 1993. He was a partner in the business with his brother. Mr. Smith was a Life member of Red Oak Mills Fire Department Arlington Station #3. He held the positions of Lt., Capt, Trustee and President and also was a Fire Policeman. Bill also loved to Ski especially with his family. He is survived by his wife: Katherine Smith of Poughkeepsie, NY; two daughters: Elizabeth M. Partridge of Poughkeepsie, NY, Robin M. Smith and her companion of Michael Winkler of North Salem, NY. Daughter and Son-In-law, Tracy A. and John Jacobs of Poughkeepsie, NY; Daughter and SonIn-law, Caroline L. and Edward Sullivan of Pleasant Valley, NY; Grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Dufresne and her husband Christopher of Rochester NH, Amy Neville and her husband Richard of Ohio, Zachary Sullivan, Matthew John Jacobs and Grace K. Jacobs. Bill was predeceased by his sister Louise Schmidt and two brothers Robert and Richard Smith. The family would like to thank, the crew at Arlington Station #3, Dr. Mendleson of the VA hospital, Dr. Robert Holland, Dr. Lawrence Solomon and the staff of Dutchess County Hospice. Calling hours will be Thursday 9/23/10 from 4pm to 8pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. There will be a Firematic Service Conducted by the Arlington Fire Department at 7pm. Burial will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, with Military Honors.
