Obituary of Edward Etten
Edward F. Van Etten passed away July 13, 2010 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at age 79 after a long courageous 12 year battle with cancer. Born March 22, 1931 in Poughkeepsie, New York, he was the Son of Edward D. and Anna Ott Van Etten. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and entered the Navy in 1951 serving for 4 years during the Korean War. While in the Navy he attended school, and he served as electronic and radar technician on an aircraft. Discharged in 1955 he then became employed by IBM. He retired in 1991 after working in Poughkeepsie and Europe as an advisory engineer. He married Nancy Mackey Van Etten on October 13, 1957 at the Congregational Church in Poughkeepsie. While permanently residing in Poughkeepsie, they built a home on Lake George in 1980 for everyone to enjoy, but with his love of warm weather and golf, they moved to Myrtle Beach in 1999 to spend winters. He was on the Board of Directors at Commons @ Cedar for many years, a member of the Quarter Century Club of IBM and bowling and golf Leagues in Poughkeepsie. He was one of the first Board Advisors to the Gleneagles Board of Directors at the Legends Newcomers Golf Club, Senior Center, Senior Friends of Myrtle Beach. Mr. Van Etten was predeceased by his parents and a sister. He is survived by his wife Nancy and many extended family, friends and cherished friend, Emma Tate, of Hyde Park. Memorial donations may be made in his name to Hospice, 371 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. There are no calling hours. A Memorial Service, with Military Honors, will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the chapel at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Local arrangements are under the directions of Timothy P.
