Obituary of Brother Donald Kelly

Brother Donald Kelly, FMS, a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools for 55 years, died on August 3, 2016 at his residence in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 74 years old. Brother Donald was born in Bronx, NY. He attended St. Helena HS before entering the Marist Juniorate in Esopus, NY IN 1957. He became a postulant with the Marist Brothers in 1960 and entered the Marist Brothers Novitiate at Esopus, NY in 1961. He professed first vows in 1962. After completing his religious and academic studies at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, he began his ministry serving as a teacher at Christ the King HS in NY from 1966 - 79. He also served as a teacher at Msgr. Pace HS in Florida (1979-82), Marist High School in Chicago (1982 - 84), and as a math professor at Marist College from 1986-2015 He professed his final vows in 1967. He earned three Masters degrees during his lifetime. The first an MA in Math from Hunter College in 1969, the second an MA in Statistics from NYU in 1974 and the third an MA in Computer Science from Marist College in 1986. He also earned a PHD in Mathematics from Brooklyn Polytech in 1993. Brother Donald was the son of Patrick and Mary (Reidy) Kelly. He is survived by his sisters, Patricia McCarthy (David), MD and Eileen Bohan (Jim), MSW, his nieces Monica, Teresa, Andrea, and Mary, his nephews Matthew and Kevin, his sister-in-law, Josephine Kelly, his cousins, many friends as well as by his Marist Brothers of the Province of the United States He is predeceased by his brother Tom. In lieu of flowers, the Kelly family requests a donation to the Brother Donald Kelly Scholarship Fund. Visitation will be held Sunday August 7, 2016 from 2pm to 7pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11am Monday August 8, 2016 at the Marist College Chapel Route 9 Poughkeepsie, New York. Burial will follow at the Marist Brothers Cemetery 1455 Broadway Esopus, NY 12429
