Obituary of Mary Luty
Mom loved us kids with all her heart and soul. She did everything for us when we were little and we grew she was always there for us. She was the best mom and our best friend and we'll love her forever. Besides being a great mom, she was a wonderful homemaker, gourmet cook and baker. At our house we always had good home cooked meals in a beautiful, tasteful setting. Maybe we weren't "well to do," but we did well because mom made it that way for us. Outside the home she worked a full time job. First at Fallkill National Bank and then at Dutchess County Dept. of Social Services for 25 years, where she "took every test." After work she came home to take care of us. At home, she loved to cook, knit, crochet, and do needlepoint. She was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. She could read, write, and speak the Polish language. She loved the fine arts, opera, ballet, and painting. She also shared with us a love for the popular music of our times. She was an avid Yankee fan and loved watching the games, and usually about once a year we went to Yankee Stadium for a game. She loved to go bowling and was a member of the Dutchess Bowling League. She never missed church on Sunday, and presently was a member of St. Mary's Church, Poughkeepsie, and formerly a long time parishioner of St. Joseph Parish, Poughkeepsie. As an Army wife, she traveled extensively in Europe and the USA. After her retirement in 1984, she took college courses in opera and ancient history. She was a volunteer at Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. She traveled again to Europe; she loved Italy and all things Italian. When she lived for some years in Saugerties, she was a member of the Saugerties Women's Club, and at age 89, she enrolled in a series of scripture study courses and successfully completed 3 years of classes. Mom was born the 5th child of Wincenty and Sophie Luty on December 14, 1916. Growing up, she attended local schools and was a 1934 graduate of Poughkeepsie High School. As a young woman, she worked in her father's family bakery, Luty's Bakery, frying the doughnuts. Later, she drove the delivery truck while her brothers were away during war time. She married our dad, Joseph S. Parren on October 2, 1943 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he was stationed at the time. She is survived by her son, Joseph S. Perna of Poughkeepsie, NY, her daughter, Annette Marie Dixon and son in law Raymond Dixon of Waterton, Mass. Her grandsons, Andrew Dixon and Gabriel Almestica. Brother, Henry J. Luty of Hyde Park, NY, and sister, Evelynne McIlravy and numerous nephews and nieces. Words can never really describe mom, but she loved us with all her heart and soul and we loved her the most. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 7 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 10am at St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie, NY.
