Obituary of Helen Nuhn

Helen Shaker Nuhn, 88, a lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, died peacefully on Thursday, August 18, 2011. Born to the late Kathleen Carlon and Thomas Shaker, Helen graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and then attended Vassar Brothers School of Nursing. Mrs. Nuhn served in the US Army during World War II and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. After the war, she received a bachelor's degree in Nursing from Marquette University. She later taught nursing at both Vassar Brothers Hospital and at the Hudson River State Hospital School of Nursing, now the Hudson River Psychiatric Center. While at the latter, she met and married Benjamin J. Nuhn. Mr. Nuhn died in 1990. Helen gave up nursing to raise their five children, four of whom survive her. A daughter, Kathleen Anne died in 1970. She will be missed by her daughter, Mary Ellen Perich and her husband Louis of New Hampshire. Also three sons; John and his wife Suzie of Iowa, Thomas (Tim) Nuhn and his wife Audrey of Hyde Park, NY and Paul Nuhn of Poughkeepsie. NY. She was the loving grandmother of nine: Kathleen, Lauren and Stephen Perich; Jacob, Charles and Rachel Nuhn; Olivia and Henry Nuhn and James Madden. She is also survived by a sister; Janet M. Shaker and a brother; Thomas R. Shaker, both of Poughkeepsie. She will be remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. In her later years she gave freely of her time volunteering at many organizations, several of which include St. Francis Hospital, The American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. Calling hours will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Poughkeepsie. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and Hospice, Inc.
