Obituary of George Polhemus
George departed on October 22, 2010 from Wingate Care in Highland to join his beloved wife June after an extended illness. He was 91 years of age. He was the son of Charles W and Florence C Thompson Polhemus of Poughkeepsie. George was born in Poughkeepsie on January 11, 1919. He resided in Poughkeepsie all his life except for the years between 1956 and 1960 when he lived in Lexington Kentucky and then returned to Poughkeepsie. George graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1938 and enlisted in the U S Army in 1940. He was eventually transferred to the U S Army Air Corps until his discharge in 1945 as a Tech Sergeant. After his discharge he attended Vassar College under the G.I. bill. George was married to June C. Wood Polhemus who predeceased him in 1999. His sister Ruth Dow and his brother Ralph Polhemus also predeceased him. George was a very devoted family father and husband and is survived by his two sons Leonard and his wife Mary Ann and Gary and his wife Linda-Marie. His Grandchildren William, Gary Jr, Leonard Jr and Brad also survive him. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews spread around the country. George worked for IBM from 1951 until his retirement in 1977, next working as the bookkeeper for Inn at the Falls until his final retirement in 1995. He had several hobbies including family ancestury, model railroading, reading, and classical music and building model boats. In family history he researched the Polhemus family and wrote his own documentary on it dating back to the 1300âÂÂs in Austria. George was a lifetime volunteer member of Arlington Engine Co. #1and the American Legion Post in Arlington. He was also a member of several organizations related to his above hobbies. George was a kind and gentle man all his life and instilled those traits plus honesty and fairness in his entire family. He is a member of the Dutch Reformed Church on Hooker Ave in Poughkeepsie. He will be sadly missed by his entire family and his devotion and values will guide them through their entire lives Calling hours will be held on Monday October 25, 2010 6pm to 8pm at the Timothy Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave Poughkeepsie, New York. Services will be Tuesday October 26, 2010 11:30am at the Dutch Reformed Church on Hooker Ave. George will be interred in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in the family plot with his wife, parents and brother and sister in law.
