Obituary of Leokadia Sowul
Leokadia Zajkowska Sowul, 89, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Born in Poughkeepsie on December 3, 1919, she was the daughter of Joseph and Zofia (Stahurska) Zajkowski. She moved with her family to Poland and later returned to the United States in January, 1939, working at her beloved Vassar College until her marriage to Felix Sowul on July 2, 1950. He predeceased her in 1999. She is survived by three children, Stephanie & David Walsh, Poughkeepsie, NY, Michael & Donna Sowul, Chelsea, NY and Vivian & Daniel Elderkin, Staatsburg, NY; six adored grandchildren, Brian & Jillian Walsh, Poughkeepsie, Nicholas Sowul, Millbrook, Adam Sowul, Cornwall, Jennifer Walker, Highland and Catherine Elderkin, Newark, DE, as well as several loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Wladyslaw Zajkowski, Antek Zajkowski and Theodora Zajkowska Adamski. Arrangements are under the direction of the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY. Calling hours are on Friday, July 24 from 4 pm to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 25 at 9:30 am at St. Joseph's Church, Lafayette Place, Poughkeepsie. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Because of her love of children, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in lieu of flowers.
