Obituary of George Wilkinson

George T. Wilkinson 88 of the Town of Poughkeepsie died July 30, 2011 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Born in Poughkeepsie on February 12, 1923 he was the son of George E. and Susan Clum Wilkinson. George was a local resident all his life, a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and a member of Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie. On February 11, 1944 at St. Mary's Church Poughkeepsie, George married Marion D. Kelley; she predeceased him on September 2, 2007. George was the service manager and VP of Operations while employed at Mid Hudson Bottled Gas, and he retired after 50 years of employment. He then went on to work for the Town of Poughkeepsie at the Auto Center as a mechanic and retired after 6 years of service. George served in the United States Army in Normandy during WWII. While in the service George converted to Roman Catholic at Notre Dame along with over 100 other soldiers. He was a member of Poughkeepsie Elks BPOE 275, a 58 year member of the American Legion Post 1302, a founding member of the Hudson Valley Early Ford V8 Club, Mid Hudson Antique Auto Club of America and the National Antique Club of America, a member of the Hudson Valley Model A Club in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Whenever there was an old car show in the area George participated in it. In 2003 George had his 50th Anniversary with the American Legion. George and Marion traveled all over the United States after they retired, making many friends for life. George is survived by his two sons, Peter Wilkinson and his wife, Colleen of Pleasant Valley and Thomas Wilkinson of Pleasant Valley. His grandchildren and their spouses Nicole and Brad Pascale of Vero Beach FL, Cody Wilkinson of Pleasant Valley, Thomas Wilkinson of White Plains, Matthew Wilkinson of Wallkill, NY and three great grandchildren Hayden C., Daisy May and Colby Pascale. Calling hours will be held Sunday August 7, 2011 from 4pm to 8pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie New York 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday 10am August 8, 2011 at Holy Trinity Church Poughkeepsie. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery Poughkeepsie.
