I often think of John and now especially on the one year anniversary of his passing and since Ash Wednesday has just recently passed. John had such a wonderful sense of humor! Each Ash wednesday he would ask me if I was going to church to get ashes. I would say yes, but after work, he would say "oh , you don't have to wait" and dip his finger in my ash tray and try to get my forehead. We, the whole office, would laugh so hard. There were so many wonderful and funny stories that we shared with John. He is missed and remembered and always will be.

To the family of John Nelson: Thank you so much for inviting Gail and I to the reception at Christos. It was an honor to share in the celebration of the life of this wonderful man's life. He was truly one of the people I looked up to and tried to emulate when I worked with him in Outside Plant Engineering. God bless you all. Jim and Gail

To the Nelson Family, I also started in NY Telephone but 20 years later than John did. I was severely injured in an on the job accident and upon having rehabilitation I was assigned to the Engineering Dept. in Poughkeepsie, NY. The lead Engineer was John Nelson. Mr. Nelson treated me so well and saw to it that I learned how what I used to do in the field was put on paper and then he trained me to take field notes for the engineers in the department. I will always remember how kind and patient he was to help me as a total rookie that the Company was trying to make a position for so I could continue to work after a 6 story fall. So many other companies would call us and always ask for John. It was so hard to divert them to another employee because they knew excellence and they wanted the BEST! I know from John's religious beliefs that he is in Heaven and in no more pain. He is with the Lord and that is very consoling to know. May he rest in peace and may you his family know God's Peace and Comfort. Sincerely Robert F. Hauser

I have such warm memories of Sunday drives with both John and Pat Nelson. I met this lovely couple through their daughter, and my friend, Kathy who worked with me at IBM. I so enjoyed the calm presence of John and felt so welcome into the family ritual of taking a leisurely ride on a Sunday afternoon. I saw places in Poughkeepsie I didn't know existed and laughed often. John was someone that made me feel safe, always welcome and special. I would describe him as a "gentle giant" - he was gentle of heart and a giant in stature. I am grateful to have known him and wish him the peace he now so deserves.
