I met Rocco Surico at Central Hudson's gerating station in Newburgh, NY, somewhere in the mid to late 1990's. We were both working as Security Guards there. In the begining he was what seemed like a true friend and someone I could count on.
As time passed it became clear to me that he was not a real friend, but was only using me to amuse himself. I started to see the truth one day when I went to visit him in the hospital, he had a problem with his foot at the time. In his hospital room he introduced me to his wife, who basicly took no interest in me what so ever. The tipoff was he introduced me not as his friend, but as his co-worker. After he recovered and returned to work he made mention of wanting to go fishing with me. I accepted the offer as I should have. Internally I knew nothing would come of it and played along as he spoke of a fishing trip in the days and weeks to come. At one point in time, he went so far as to offer me a fishing hook, I said thank you and put it in my wallet. I would ask him when he wanted to go on this trip and, as expected, I would get nebulus answers. The end of this little game came when I never reacted to his telling me of a fishing trip he organized with his two sons whom at that time were about 5 & 6 years old. I guess he wanted me to ask him about our trip. I didn't take the bait and just let the moment pass.
I don't think back on Rocco as an Evil person, and just the other day he crossed my mind and I wondered about his current whereabouts and what would be going on for him. Only yesterday I learned that he's gone, earlier today I visited his stone in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. I guess I went to visit, because of the times before I learned who I really was to him. In the end, to him, I was only someone he worked with for a while and he thought of me as just a passing aquantence.
I think back on Rocco neither as a saint or a sinner. Just as an average person who wanted to pull something over on me and have his chuckle.
