Obituary of Sophie McGrath

Sophie Marion McGrath, 83, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, she was born August 20, 1928, to the late Adela Poplawski and Joseph Winnicki. On July 2, 1950, she married the love of her life, Vincent S. McGrath, who predeceased her on January 12, 1983. In addition to her husband, Sophie was also predeceased by her sister, Josephine Weyhe, and her brothers Joseph S. Winnicki and Chester Winnicki. Survivors include her children: daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Matt Sefcik of LaGrange; daughter Patricia Todd and her fiancé Ray Wagner of Wappingers Falls, and son and daughter-in law, John and Bonnie McGrath of Poughkeepsie. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren: Matthew, Kara, and Lindy Sefcik. Additionally, Sophie is survived by her dear niece, Elizabeth Maurer and her husband Emil, of Catskill, as well as several other nieces and nephews. Sophie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, always giving of herself. She enjoyed playing Bingo, but most of all loved being with her family and grandchildren, the joys of her life. Sophie will forever live close in our hearts with many wonderful memories. The family would also like to thank the staff at The Pines of Poughkeepsie, who gave special care and compassion to Sophie. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, from 6-8pm at the Timothy P. Doyle funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at 10am, Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. As Sophie had a deep love for animals, memorial donations may be made in her memory to Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave, Hyde Park, NY 12538.
