Obituary of Helen Wenzel
Helen M. Wenzel, age 88, a Town of Poughkeepsie resident, died peacefully on August 13th at Vassar Brothers Hospital.
She was employed as a seamstress at Florence Walsh until her retirement. Mrs. Wenzel was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie, a member of the Ladies Auxilary of the Exempt Firemans' Association, and the Polka Sportsman Club. She had a great love for her family and enjoyed knitting and cross-stitching.
Born October 9, 1923, in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of Louis Neuwirth and Mary Wirhouski Neuwirth. She was educated in Poughkeepsie Schools.
On January 23, 1949, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, she married John P. Wenzel, Sr. who predeceased her on August 16, 1991.
Other survivors include her daughter, Patricia Sample and son-in-law Michael of Poughkeepsie; a son, Kevin Wenzel and daughter Jessica Baker of Poughkeepsie; a daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Wenzel of North Carolina; two sisters, Frances Lezon of Poughkeepsie and Eleanor Walker of Washington State; four grandchildren: Christopher Sample and his wife, Helen Jo; Timothy Sample and his wife, Jennifer; Jennifer Sample all of Poughkeepsie; Jonathan Wenzel of North Carolina; six great-grandchildren, Brianna, John, Patrick, Brianna, Selena, and Amber, and several nieces and nephews. Her son, John P. Wenzel Jr., predeceased her on January 6, 2012.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York.
As Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Poughkeepsie.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice.
