Obituary of Thomas Hogarth

Thomas E. Hogarth, 69, of Hopewell Junction, New York, died on September 22, 2012 at home in Hopewell Junction, New York of multiple sclerosis. His death was announced by his son, Justin Hogarth. He was born February 15, 1943 in Jermyn, Pennsylvania, the first child of John R. and Molly Hogarth. He graduated from the Jermyn branch of Lakeland High School in 1960. He was awarded a full Navy NROTC scholarship to the University of South Carolina and graduated in 1964 with a BS in Mathematics. He trained as a Navy air navigator in Pensacola, Florida and was then assigned to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. He navigated a Lockheed C-121, first on Project Jenny, which broadcast television to the armed forces from the aircraft to military in Vietnam. His assignments with the Oceanographic Air Survey Unit (OASU) involved navigating a Lockheed C-121 aircraft to transport a team of scientists and their equipment around the world to determine magnetic and other properties of the planet. He navigated over both the north and south poles and landed on all continents, sometimes navigating in severe topographical and weather conditions. (His stories of these trips are on HYPERLINK "http://tinyurl.com/TomHogarth" http://tinyurl.com/TomHogarth) After completing his OASU duties, he was assigned as a navigation instructor at the Pensacola Naval Air Station until 1969. He began his career with IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York as programmer on the maintenance system for MVS and went to SHARE meetings, representing the lab, to learn and resolve systems issues with customers. In 1980, he transferred to the IBM in New York City, where he worked with customers in defining and implementing computing systems. While working in New York, he lived in Hoboken, New Jersey. While at IBM, he was an active runner and took part in many races, finishing the New York Marathon in 1977. As his multiple sclerosis progressed, he learned new adaptation methods and kept abreast of current events and The New York Yankees. He had an active interest in weather and maintained a weather station at his home that contributed to the Weather Underground. He is survived by his son, Justin, daughter-in-law Paige and their son, Hudson of Pleasant Valley, NY. Also surviving is his former wife, Claudine Jones, Endicott, NY and his four siblings: Peggy Hogarth Minnis of Rowayton, CT, Michael Hogarth of Harrisburg, PA, Kevin Hogarth of Livingston, NJ and Brian Hogarth of New Providence, NJ and six nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his longtime friend and caretaker Georgette "Tucky" Bento and loving family. Faithful friends Peter Callaway and James N. Roberts. The family will receive guests at at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York.
