Obituary of Virginia Berge
On March 4, 2013 Ginnie went home to be with the Lord she loved. Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 19, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Karna (Sorensen) Cocheo. On May 24, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ginnie married Burton O. Berge. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May of 2012. Burton survives at home.
Ginnie graduated Bay Ridge High School in Brooklyn, NY in 1945. She was also a graduate of the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN in 1948. While there she taught Sunday school at the Sr. Kenny Polio Institute in Minneapolis. She was a counselor at Camp Norge, New York City, NY. From the age of 14, she was involved in Christian Education. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation Classes and "The Bethel Bible Series". Ginnie worked as a Clerk-Typist at Arma Corp., Brooklyn, NY, and in the finance department of J.J. Newberry Co., NY, NY and was assistant office Secretary at Trinity Lutheran Church Brooklyn, NY. For many years she was an advisor to young adults and coordinator/chairperson of Adult Education at St. John's Lutheran Church, Poughkeepsie, NY. and a member/registrar for the Congregational Retreat Committee. Ginnie was a former member of the Steering Committee for Lutheran Youth Encounter in the position of registrar. She loved to bowl and play golf. She was a member of the IBM Women's Ladybird Bowling League. She was also a Charter Member of the St. John's Lutheran Church Golf Ministry.
In addition to her husband, Ginnie is survived by her children; Philip (Susan) Berge of Duluth, MN, David (Paula) Berge of Hyde Park, NY, and Paul Berge of Stone Ridge, NY., Laurie Berge (Scott) Hagen of Elizabethtown, KY., 11 Grandchildren, 1 great-grand child, her brother Frank Cocheo of Allendale, NJ and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or the St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Calling Hours will be held on Monday March 11, 2013 at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, March 12 at 11:00am at St. John's Lutheran Church 55 Wilbur Blvd. Poughkeepsie.
