Obituary of Brenda Hoskins
Brenda Joyce Hoskins a long time resident of the Mid Hudson Valley, departed this world on March 14, 2013 after a courageous battle with uterine cancer at her home. She was 57 years old.
Brenda J Hoskins was born on July 25, 1955 to the late Louis and Mildred Anderson. Originally born in the Bronx NY, Brenda's parents decided to settle in New Paltz NY, and made this their new home. During formative years, she was contemplating what she wanted out of life. Once in High school, she was asked what she wanted to be. Her response, was " to be a mother" . This simple statement reflects the kind of woman she was, kind, humble and nurturing, which was manifested later in her life. After Brenda graduated from New Paltz High School she married for the first time and lived in Rochester. From this marriage she had a daughter Michelle Patterson, born Sept. 1977. This marriage later dissolved and she came back to New Paltz and attended Marist College . She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work. She began working for the county in a variety of capacity's, such as child protective services.
In 1984, she met a man whom she would spend the next 28 years with, Curtis L Hoskins. Curtis and Brenda were married on June 29, 1985 at St Mary's church in Poughkeepsie . They moved into their new home in Lagrange on July 16 of 1985, where they continued their courtship until the very end.
June 1987, Brenda and Curtis had a son Curtis L Hoskins II. While being a "stay on mom" for 3 years, she decided to further her education. She enrolled in Adelphi University in New City, NY and received her Master's degree in Social Work .While pursuing her degree, she was working part time for the county as a social worker/therapist..After her degree, she continued working for the county in a variety of capacities, DCC Dept of Mental Hygiene as a Substance Abuse Counselor, DCC PINS Coordinator, a Transitional Counselor for the DCC Jail, a Rape Crisis advocate and as a Child Abuse Investigator, During this period, she continued to establish herself by acquiring a variety of professional licenses chief among these was the LCSWR/SAP
The next significant event in her life, was the birth of our grandchildren Jeffrey and Phylicia Cohen.
She eventually decided to pursue establishing her own practice. Brenda established "Emotional Hugs Counseling" , a successful practice specializing in Multi-Cultural Psychotherapist working with relationship issues, with both adults and adolescents
In April of 2004, Brenda and Curtis began attending Faith Assembly of God in Poughkeepsie. This has been a significant part of their lives. From this congregation, they were able to extend their family.
In all of her ups and downs in life, it was her faith in our Lord, Jesus , that sustained her.
Brenda, Curtis, Michelle, Curtis II, Phylicia, Jeffrey and there team leader Jesus, made a great team, that will continue to thrive and prosper When you go back to her statement of what she wanted to be, she greatly achieved her goal.Great mother Great grandmother Successful business woman Great wife and friend,and a child of God .
Brenda was predeceased by her parents Louis and Mildred Anderson of Virginia.
Although, Brenda may be gone her legacy continues on in those she left behind. Her loving family, husband, Curtis L. Hoskins, her children Michelle Patterson, Curtis L. Hoskins II, her grandchildren, Jeffrey and Phylicia Cohen, all of Poughkeepsie, NY. Her sister Esther Santiago of New Jersey, brothers Louis (and his wife) and Robert Anderson both of Virginia. Her nieces, Nicole Santiago, Lauren Anderson Youngblood (her family), Ashley Anderson, Alicia Castro and nephew Johnnie Santiago (and his family). She is survived by many cousins, her Aunt Eva Alston and her sister in-law Karen Denise Castro (and her husband).
Calling hours will be held Monday from 4pm to 8pm March 18, 2013 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie New York 12603. Funeral Services will be 11am Tuesday March 19, 2013 at the Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
