My uncle Al was a great guy. His ability to slowly yet surely push my father's hot buttons and generate a 'lively' response was fascinating. Somehow I was never able to quite master his technique and get away with it. I have many good memories of my uncle, but one in particular is the most poignant. When I was 15/16, Uncle Al and Aunt Peg were on a stop over in Virginia on their way to Florida. Unlike most of my friends at the time, I was a huge fan of PBS and a new feature series about Sherlock Holmes. Somehow this topic came up one evening and I discovered that Uncle Al was also a big fan of this new show. We discussed all the details and the various nuances of this new program and how the screenplays compared so well with the actual stories. We both felt that the new actor Jeremy Brett was a dead ringer for the original likeness of Sherlock Holmes drawn by Sidney Paget when the stories first appeared in the Strand magazine. I enjoyed our discussion so very much. During their middle teen years kids either want to be, or believe they already are, adults. Uncle Al made me feel like an adult, talking about adult topics. It was such great fun. Today whenever I read or watch a Sherlock Holmes story I always think of Uncle Al. I will miss him. Michael Togna

I was fortunate to have Al share his love of music with me. Whenever he visited my family in Florida he would bring his clarinet and we would sit for hours playing clarinet duets. I am not sure who enjoyed it more. Condolences to all family members.
