Obituary of David Stamper
David was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 8, 1927, the son of Oliver and Susan Stamper. He served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II and later in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. During World War II he spent his summers working on Malabar Farm, the home of author Louis Bromfield in Mansfield, Ohio. He graduated from Williams College in 1950 and several years later joined IBM in El Paso, Texas. In 1962 he married Hilary Burridge in Dorset, England. He remained a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY since 1964.
Mr. Stamper was active in the Boy Scouts and the Epilepsy Foundation of America. In recent years he served as a Senior Net instructor and In the Academic Enrichment program at Tubman Terrace. David and Hilary were members of Trinity United Methodist Church where David taught Sunday School. They later became members of the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church and were members of the Tres Dias Community. He retired from IBM in 1992. David enjoyed skiing and sailing. He was a member of the Norrie Point Sailing Club. He was a loving and kind husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife Hilary, his son Nicholas, son Andrew and wife Lily, grandchildren Cameron and Christopher and his son Harlan and wife Gillian, grandchildren Johnathan and Olivia. His is also survived by his sister, Martha Smith of Philadelphia, Pa, and cousin, Lynn Erbe of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. His daughter Sarah predeceased him. There will be a funeral service 10am on Wednesday 5/8/2013 at the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church on New Hackensack Rd Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
