Obituary of John Gregg
John J. Gregg 88 of Poughkeepsie died Monday July 15, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital.
Born December 30, 1924 in the Bronx, he was the son of Hugh A. and Mary Hebe Gregg.
John lived with his parents until their deaths and was then cared for the rest of his life by his sister. He attended ARC programs and won many ribbons for his participation in Special Olympics. The last few years he attended the day program at Lutheran Care Center where he had many friends and was nurtured by the care and attention of their staff. John's joys in life were his recliner, listening to Lawrence Welk while beating his drum, the Sunday Funnies and the sweet dis of ice cream with cookies on the side. He loved his cowboy shirts and caps, especially the ones from the Yankees and Daytona Beach.
John always had a smile on his face, a hello for everyone and a handshake. He was beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews and their families and was an important part of their lives. He especially loved receiving their cards, special packages for every holiday and his birthday gifts. Most important was that he lived a happy and contented life at home all his 88 years due to the love and devoted care of his parents and sister Helen. John enriched our lives and we will treasure his memory.
John is survived by his loving sister Helen Canale of Poughkeepsie, NY and many nieces and nephews an Great Grand nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, William and Hugh Gregg.
Calling hours will be held Thursday July 18, 2013 from 5pm to 8pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY. Funeral services will be held Friday 10am at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish 299 Hudson View Dr. Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery Valhalla, NY.
