Obituary of George Hack
George Jacob Hack, 88, of Poughkeepsie died at home surround by his family on Sunday, December 1. 2013 George was born on June 12, 1925, the son of the late George Hack and Gertrude Gueckel. He was predeceased by his brother Philip. He married Ruth Cornwell on March 24, 1951 who survives at home. He will be sadly missed by his children Karen Hack and her husband Mark Mohrmann, Philip Hack and his wife Janice and Peter Hack and his wife Judy. He is also survived by his grandchildren Emma Mohrmann, Rosa Mohrmann, Lindsay Hack and Jamie Hack, several nieces and nephews and a cousin William Turner of East Williston, NY. In addition to his immediate family, George is also survived by Sylvia Padilla an American Field Service high school student from Bolivia. Sylvia lived with the Hacks for one year in 1970.
After completing high school in Mineola, NY, George served in the Navy during World War II as a Second Lieutenant. He graduated from Hofstra University in 1952 and moved to the Hudson Valley in 1955 when he began work with Daystrom Corporation. He later transferred to IBM from where he retired in 1985.
George owned a home at Schroon Lake, NY in the Adirondack Mountains, an area he loved as much as the Hudson Valley. He enjoyed nothing more than entertaining family and friends at both his homes. He spent summers boating on the Adirondack lakes and the Hudson River. He was a member of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Foundation and loved to participate in the river sails and annual festival. In 1973, while employed by IBM, George and his family were transferred to Stuttgart, Germany for one year. He established lifelong friendships there and upon returning to the states continued to provide personal support and friendship to German families transferred to the United States. He and Ruth often traveled throughout Europe visiting the many friends they had developed there. He also traveled to Bolivia to visit Sylvia with whom he remained close to all these years.
George spent countless hours volunteering to help others needing assistance. He was a regular at Dutchess Outreach Food Center, tutored city children at Poughkeepsie's Tubman Terrace After School Academic Program and spent many hours working at Second Hand Rose Consignment Shop in downtown Poughkeepsie sponsored by the Community Methodist Church of Poughkeepsie where he was a member. To fulfill his final wish, George's family donated his body to the Albany Medical College.
The family will receive friends from 3pm to 6pm on Saturday December 7, 2013 at the Timothy Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
