Obituary of Michael Sofokles

Michael (Mitch) Sofokles, 83, passed away on February 11, 2014 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY. Michael was born on October 20, 1930 in NYC, the son of Charles and Tekla Sofokles. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Economics in 1952. Mitch entered the Air Force, serving in the Korean War. He than continued with graduate studies at NYU and Hofstra University and became and Engineering Cost Analyst for Sperry Rand and Long Island and an Engineering Project Administrator for RCA in NJ. Michael married Myrna Peggy Adonis in Orange, NJ on October 20, 1957. The couple moved to Lagrangeville, NY where he took over the family business of Nor Ann's Drive In restaurant on Rt. 55 which he ran with his uncle Sam, and then cousin, Gregory Mitchell for 23 years. Following this, he went to work for the next 10 years for IBM. Michael was a 44 year member of AHEPA, where her served as a past local chapter president and was an active member of the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. Michael was also the current treasurer of the Stonebridge Homeowners Association. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances, and a brother, William Sofokles. Michael is survived by his wife of 57 Years, M. Peggy Sofokles, daughter Cindy Sofokles, son Charles Sofokles, daughter in-law Terri Sofokles, grandchildren Michael and Colette Sofokles, sister in-law Donna Sofokles, and nephews Bradley, Philip and wife Alycia, and John Sofokles. He is also survived by several cousins, great nieces and nephews, and godchildren. Calling hours will take place on Monday, February 17 at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home from 4-8pm. Father Gregory Patsis will lead a prayer at 6pm and a 7pm AHEPA memorial service will follow. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, February 18 at 10am at Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church 140 S.
