Obituary of William Paroli

William L. ("Bill") Paroli, Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2014 surrounded by his family at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. A lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty J. (Jones) Paroli and his daugher, Elizabeth-Anne Paroli of Cranston, Rhode Island and her husband Wayne Kezirian. He was predeceased by his son, William L. Paroli, Jr., former Dutchess County Clerk, who is survived by his wife, Nancy Paroli of New Paltz. He was the son of Pio and Elizabeth Paroli, also of Poughkeepsie, and at the time of his death resided in a home on Cream Street which was built by his parents at the site of the "Twin Elms" swimming pool, a popular recreational attraction which was built by his parents and closed in the mid 1960's. One of five siblings, Bill was very proud of his youngest brother Robert Paroli, who recently retired from a distinguished career in North Carolina as a high school football coach. Bob resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina with his wife Billie. Bill was predeceased by his sisters Frances Curtis and Helen Pink and by his brother John Paroli who is survived by his wife, Charlotte, currently of Rhinebeck. He was much loved by and very proud of his granddaughter, Amanda Kezirian, and greatly enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and was particularly fond of his niece, Robin (Jones) Bohlmann of Poughkeepsie. Bill graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1946, where he was class treasurer and was voted "most vivacious" in his senior year. He was a gifted athlete, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He was named the outstanding player on the football team as a fullback in his senior year and displayed that trophy proudly in his home. He played semi-pro football for the Poughkeepsie Indians after attending Arnold College. Bill served as a member of the City of Poughkeepsie police department for eleven years before leaving with the rank of detective to become the first investigator for the Dutchess County Office of Public Defender. His close relationship with his detective partner, Nick Frisone, remained a cherished memory until the time of his passing. Bill was a larger than life figure who was caring, compassionate and loyal. He served as the Dutchess County Commissioner of Elections and as the chair of the Dutchess County Republican Committee and never shied from a political battle. During the period prior to his passing, Bill enjoyed excellent care and comforting companionship from a number of dedicated caregivers who have become members of the extended Paroli family. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to them and to the staff of South Circle 5 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center for their exceptional and compassionate care. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie on Tuesday, March 25th from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. Mary's Church, 231 Church Street, Poughkeepsie at 10:00 on Wednesday, March 26th.
