Obituary of Roger Smith
Roger G. Smith, 79, of Saugerties, New York died on Tuesday May 20, 2014, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Ellenville, New York on September 23, 1934, he was the son of the late Milton and the late Stella (Depuy) Smith.
Roger served in the United States Army in the MD East Sig Command in Eritrea, Africa from 1957-1959. Roger was a retired employee of IBM in Kingston, New York where he worked for over 30 years and was a technical writer. He loved to play the banjo, cook, socialize, and garden. Roger was a member of the Riverbank Banjo Band for over 30 years and had played the banjo, his great passion, for almost 50 years. Roger was a member of St. Mary's of the Snow Church in Saugerties, NY.
Roger married Joan Manning on June 15, 2008 at St. Mary's Church.
In addition to his wife Joan, Roger is survived by his children: Roger Smith and his wife Mary of Albuquerque, New Mexico; David Smith and his wife Cindy of Wilmington, NC; Craig Smith of Denton Texas; Bette Smith and her husband Kevin Moloney of Denver, CO; and Kathleen Smith and her partner Randy Angiel of Saugerties, NY. He is also survived by a brother, Milton Smith, and five grandchildren, Sarah King, Sam Smith, Brendan Honzik, Callum Amidon, and Ryan Honzik.
On October 10, 1999, his first wife Elizabeth predeceased Roger. Two sisters, Miriam Smith and Doris Nolan, also predeceased him.
Calling hours will take place on Wednesday May 28, 2014, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. Funeral Services will be on Thursday May 29, 2014, in the Funeral Home at 10 am. Burial will follow at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Community Mausoleum.
