Obituary of Edward Reed
Edward Louis "Junie" Reed, 81, went to be with the Lord on August 11, 2014. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, on December 10, 1932, he was the son of the late Edward Clayton Reed and Mary Ellen Strother Reed. Eddie graduated from Millbrook High School in 1951. He worked for several plumbing companies before joining IBM in 1954. He enjoyed an illustrious career at IBM that spanned 35 years. Eddie began his IBM career as an assembler in the paint shop, plating and materials area. He held positions of increasing responsibility and eventually became a senior level project engineering manager. After working fro 25 years he became a member of the elite Quarter Century Club.
Eddie was very intelligent and took pride in all he did. He learned the plumbing and electrical trade as an apprentice, which served him well. He applied that expertise in building his family home which stands as a testament of his skill and craftsmanship. In addition, he loved his family and started the Reed Family Reunion which continues to this day. He researched the history and made a family tree reaching back to the 1800's.
Because he loved sports and was very athletic, Ed won many trophies and awards for baseball, golf, and bowling. He occasionally gave commentary in the Poughkeepsie Journal on the current state of baseball he was also an accomplished "southpaw" pitcher and won many games for his Millbrook team. Eddie was the golf league parliamentarian with a 12 handicap and a bowling average of 200. In 1982 he achieved the ultimate golfer's dream with a hole-in-one at the 9th hole at James Baird State Park. He is registered in the national golfer's hole-in-one registry for that rare accomplishment.
Eddie was united in holy matrimony to Barbara Scott Hancock on June 26, 1954. He leaves Barbara to cherish his life-- his loving wife of 60 years; twin daughters: Roxanne Reed of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Joanne Reed Johnson (Edward) of Morristown, New Jersey; two grandsons: Edward Johnson III, Morristown, New Jersey and Reed Fearwell, Upper Marlboro, Maryland; one granddaughter, Morgan Reed Johnson, Bronxville, New York; one sister, Margaret Washington (Frank) of Delaware. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert "Bobby" Reed. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and many friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. Friends and family will be received from 11:00am-12:00pm, with the service immediately following. Pastor William C. Knight officiating. Interment will be at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, New York.
