Obituary of Leta Harris

Leta S. Harris, 88, Town of Hyde Park, died peacefully November 11, 2014 at the Fernclifff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck, NY. A resident of the area for almost her entire life, Leta was the mother of five children -- four sons and a daughter. In addition to being a mother, she worked throughout her life in various positions at hospitals and nursing homes, and she had been employed with the Hudson River State Hospital for 10 years. Leta was born Sept. 22, 1926 in Oneonta, NY, the daughter of late Charles Albert and Hazel Dell (Spencer) Scutt. On Feb. 17, 1946 in Poughkeepsie, she married Alvin W. Harris, her husband of over 60 years. Leta loved gardening and decorating her home and she was her twin sister's best friend. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, David and Suzanne Harris, Pleasant Valley, NY; son and daughter-in-law, John and Charlene Harris, Poughkeepsie, NY; son, Gary Harris, Hyde Park, NY; and daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Louis Romm of Southborough, Massachusetts; as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin; a son, Brian; and her four sisters, including her twin sister Reta. Calling hours will be held Monday, November 17, 2014 from 10am to 11am at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. Funeral service will follow and burial will be in Union Cemetery, Route 9G
