Obituary of Sheridan Morey
Sheridan Hedges Morey, 87, of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully on January 27, at The Baptist Home in Rhinebeck, NY.
Shay was a devoted husband, loving father, honest businessman, fair employer, loyal friend, avid outdoorsmen, and active member of both his church and local community. To those who knew him, his honesty and persistence, and quirky sense of humor defined him. He was endlessly supportive of his family and friends and encouraged a sense of adventure in them through his love of biking, skiing, camping, and canoeing. He will be sorely missed.
The youngest of three, Shay was born on March 5, 1927 to Martha and Harry Morey. He served in the Navy in 1945 during WWII. In the 1960's, he opened the Ski and Sport Shop, a ski and bicycle store which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1991. To further his love of the outdoors in his community, he founded the Mid Hudson Bicycle Club and held office in the Hudson Valley Ski Club.
On October 17, 1971, Shay married Gael Ramage, who survives in Poughkeepsie. He is also survived by his two daughters and their families, Mary and Phil Bowker of Bend, OR, Karen and Sokratis Kopanou of Truckee, CA, and his namesake and new grandchild, Shea Bella Kopanou. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mariba Hipe. His brother, Gifford A. Morey, lives with his wife, Ida Morey in Cincinnati, Ohio.
There will be no calling hours. The family will celebrate his life in a memorial service held at a later date to be announced.
