Obituary of Burton Bernstein

Prof. Burton Bernstein, 94, of Poughkeepsie, NY, died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was born on December 11, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Samuel and Sydell Weingarten Bernstein. Burton graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from Brooklyn College in 1942. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Force, mostly as Communications and Radar Officer from 1943 to 1946. He received his M.A. in 1949 from Columbia University and his Ph.D. in 1954 from MIT, both in Physics. Following that, he worked for the Philco Corp., General Precision Laboratories, Republic Aviation Corp. and Litton Ind. (Airtron Div.). In 1966 he joined the faculty at the State University of NY at New Paltz and moved with his family to Poughkeepsie. He retired from New Paltz in 1998. Burton married Helen E. Kreeger on April 27, 1961 in Far Rockaway and she survives at home. Burton was a member of the Jewish Community Center, Temple Beth-El and the Beacon Hebrew Alliance for many years. He was also an avid reader of the NY Times. In addition to his wife, Burton is survived by his children; Pamela (Chris) Sullivan of Matthew, NC, Ronna J. (John) Foroglou of Poughkeepsie and his grandchildren Jordan and Jake Sullivan and Alexa and Zachary Foroglou, and his sister Marilyn Yarmark of Huntington Valley, PA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Burton was predeceased by his brother, Leonard Bernstein. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 1:00pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Burial will follow in the Beacon Hebrew Alliance Cemetery in Wappingers, NY.
