Obituary of Burton Barrenger

Burton A. Barrenger, Jr., a lifelong resident of Dutchess County, died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Northern Dutchess Hospital. Born on May 1, 1931, he was the son of the late Lillian and Burton Barrenger, Sr. Burton married Kathryn Evelyn Mower on June 3, 1956 and she predeceased him on July 2, 1996. He then married Sonia A. Pickering on December 19, 1998 and she survives him at home. Burton was a member of Masonic Lodges Triune OBED Lodge #782, Warren Lodge #32 and Hedrick Hudson Lodge #875. He was also a member of The Scottish Rite Valley of Albany and a Shriner of Cyprus Shrine, Tri-Po-Bed Grotto and Jester of Albany Court #77. Burton was also College Book Store Director of the following colleges; Dutchess Community, SUNY New Paltz and the Culinary Institute of America. He was past member board director for N.Y.S. Association of College Store and N.A.C.S., Master of Triune Lodge 1979, Secretary for ten years as District Deputy Grand Master Dutchess District, 1998-2000, Secretary Treasurer of Dutchess County Shrine Club, Past Masters Club and Past President of Dutchess and Past Grand Lodge Officers Association. He was Honorably Discharged from the US Army as a Veteran of the Korean Conflict 1951-1953. Burton was also a member of the American Legion Post #1302 and a life member of VFW Post #170. He was a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society for many years and was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, where he a Lecture, Eucharistic Minister and a Religious Education Teacher. He was also a member of Immaculate Conception in Bangall, NY where he as Lecture and Eucharistic Minister. In addition to his wife Sonia, Burton is survived by 3 sisters; Bernice (Richard) Manning of Hyde Park, NY, Barbara (Michael) Dupilka of Hyde Park, NY and Linda Travis of Pleasant Valley, NY. He is also survived by his step-sons Lorin Pickering of Clinton Corners, NY and Thomas Bullied of Savannah, GA, his four grandchildren, nieces, nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Bernard A. Barrenger and his sister Beverly Kiser. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2015, from 4:00 - 8:00pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. There will be a Masons service held 7pm during calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11am Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Immaculate Conception Church in St. Mary's Parish Hall in Bangall, NY. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh, NY. Memorial donations can be made to Dutchess County Shrine Club C/O Wilfred Roehe 8 Skyview Drive Poughkeepsie, New York 12603.
