Dad always loved a good joke, even if the joke was on him. But his dad-my Gramps-had him beat by a country mile.
My brothers and I grew up in a small, cedar-shake house that Dad built on a pine-covered mountainside in Putnam Valley. As our family grew, Dad decided to add a den and a master suite on the back.
He worked full-time as a carpenter, so the addition was a night and weekend project, but it steadily progressed. The inside was finished, and all that was left to do was the siding.
That's when The Woodpecker showed up.
The beaky little bird took a liking to the exposed plywood sheathing on the house. At first, Dad ignored the nightly pecking and tapping, but soon hit his limit, and vowed to solve the problem.
One particular Saturday afternoon, Dad was comfortably parked in the den watching TV, and . . . tap-tap-tap, on the back of the house. Again.
Brother Mike and I saw his jaw tighten as he stood, grabbed the shotgun off the rack, and marched out the storm door to finish it. But after a few minutes, silence. Nothing. Dad returned and retired the blunderbuss.
And just as he settled in on the couch . . . tap-tap-tap. He jumped up, grabbed the gun and raced out the door; but again, nothing.
This time, Dad came back in, propped the door open, stood the gun alongside it and motioned to Mike and me to stay quiet as he perched on the couch. Predictably, after a few minutes, tap-tap-tap.
Our hearts raced as Dad crept silently out the door, shotgun at the ready (and he was appropriately tactically attired in only his boxers) as we awaited that fateful blast.
The sound of Dad's voice coloring the air with some very creative language jolted us from our seats. We bolted through the door and around the house to find him shaking his fist, shouting, "I almost blew your head off!"
And there, with the biggest smirk on his face ever, in overalls and his favorite cap with a cigar, was our Gramps-standing sheepishly behind the house with a rock in his hand . . .

A man that will truly be missed. He always had a joke. We just wish we had known him longer than we did. Enjoyed every minute.

Sorry to hear about Arnie. Didn't know Arnie for a long time, but during our neighbor conversations, I felt like I have known him for a long time. Come to find out we both grew up in Putnam Valley. Our conversations touched on the many spots we both frequented in the Putnam Valley area. Rest in peace, Arnie.

hey POP thank you for teaching me and instilling the awareness and appreciation of the tranquility of the sun rising on a trout stream, the calmness of a hilltop nap during a hunt, and the peaceful comfort of a sunset over the next ridge.I LOVE YOU

Mr."K" was an unforgettable part of my "Wonder years".Always kind to me, I think he appreciated how much we loved the outdoors and our Huck Finn way of life in those early years. I used to love to relay my successes, knowing full well he had a story to top it.That was part of his charm, along with the hard work, and his love of the folks of our great town. Thanks for the trips to church, Larry's Country Store, and the lake Mr.k, and for always listening to my tales first.Fish on...
