Obituary of Elizabeth Wyatt
Elizabeth Johanna Wyatt, nee Czerny, passed into Eternal Life on November 11, 2015 in the presence of her daughter Christel Repenning and her only grandson Father Robert Repenning, Pastor of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was predeceased by her husband and three children.
Elizabeth was born March 25, 1917 in Reichenau in Saxony, Germany, the daughter of Josef Apelt and Anna Czerny of Zittau, Germany. She was educated both in Germany and Czechoslovakia and was a graduate of the Maedchen Buerger Schule, completing studies in Home Economics. Elizabeth moved to Berlin in the late 1930's and after WWII, met her beloved husband Marion, an American soldier, in 1946. The two were married in 1947 and sailed to America on the 9th of September 1948. The couple had four children, with two of the children passing as infants. Marion retired from the U.S. Army in 1971 and Elizabeth and her family settled in New City, NY after being stationed in France, Germany, Oklahoma and Washington State.
After spending many years as a "stay-at-home" Mom, Elizabeth went to work, first at Holiday Inn in Orangeburg, NY, then Stop and Shop in New City, and finally Pathmark, in West Nyack, NY and Nanuet, NY. While at Pathmark, where she was known as "Liz," Elizabeth was a member of the bowling league, ending up with "Most Improved" bowler award. Elizabeth was a real "people person," enjoyed her customers, was a diligent cashier and totally uncooperative with armed robbers. She remained in touch with several of her co-workers throughout the years after retirement and wherever she went in Rockland County, someone always popped up, calling out, "Liz, we miss you at Pathmark!"
Elizabeth's talents were truly genius. She was extraordinarily gifted with nimble fingers and a sharp eye, designing and knitting her own patterns, sewing either from scratch or in repair. In the kitchen, she was an expert baker and a culinary genius of international fare. Using knowledge acquired in school and the forests of her childhood, there was little in her garden that she couldn't accomplish. She was a devoted Mets fan, loved "sport," animals of all kinds, especially her dachshund Sophie. Elizabeth always remained interested in politics, world affairs and was a patriotic lover of her adopted homeland America. Her smile was legendary, her eyes purest blue, and although physically a little woman, she was known for her magnanimous personality. Most notably though, Elizabeth found her greatest treasures in family, friends and her Faith.
Calling hours will be held Monday November 16, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, New York 12603.
