Obituary of John Martyn

John Martyn, age 91, of Jensen Beach, Fl. and former resident of Poughkeepsie, NY died Friday December 4 at Vassar Brothers Hospital after a brief illness. John was born August 10, 1924 in Swansea, Wales, the only child of Ernest and Mary (John) Martyn. John immigrated to the United States with his parents, graduated Tottenville High School, Staten Island, NY and shortly thereafter served his country in the United States Army, in Company "A" of the 710th Tank Battalion. Attached to the 1st Marine Division, John proudly earned an American Service Medal, Asiatic Service Medal, WW II Victory Medal, 2 Purple Hearts, 4 Battle Stars and a Philippines Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star. Upon discharge from the US Army, John attended Syracuse University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, Master's Degree, Principal and Superintendent Certificates. John taught at Syracuse University and SUNY Genesseo in the Education Departments before beginning his administrative career as a Principal in Canastota, NY Averill Park, NY, Morrisville, NY and finally Spackenkill Union Free Schools, where he served as Principal of Martha Lawrence Elementary and the first Principal of Hagan Elementary School, and for a short period as "Acting District Principal." He retired in 1979. While attending Syracuse University in 1949, John married the love of his life, the former Carol Dibble, who predeceased him in 2007. John and Carol enjoyed 58 years of marriage, and spent their retirement summers at their beloved Hatch Lake, Eaton, NY and winters in Jensen Beach, FL. John was a charter member and Past President the Poughkeepsie Rotary South. He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and conservationist who passed his love of the outdoors on to his children and grandchildren. John is survived by his son, Breck Martyn and his wife Terri, of Poughkeepsie, NY and his daughter, Kristi Noyes and her husband Geoff, of Sherrill, NY. John is also survived by five grandchildren, Noelle Noyes and her husband Darren Reaume of Fort Collins, CO., Jay Martyn and his wife Samantha of Golden, CO., Meryl Noyes, of Estes Park, CO., Heather Colvin and her husband Michael of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Spencer Noyes and his wife Natashia of Munnsville, NY. Surviving also are great grandchildren Camber and Saylee Reaume of Fort Collins, CO. At the request of the family, a private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
