Obituary of David Conroy

David W. Conroy, 78, of Poughkeepsie died Feb. 10, 2016. Dave was the son of Leo and Thelma (Lawn) Conroy of Brockton, MA. He is survived by his wife ("The Bride") of 55 years Diane (Liscomb) Conroy and children Dori, D-J, Diana (Fred), Darrin (Suzanne), Doug, and Danielle (Micah). Dave is also survived by his brothers William and Michael (Joan) of MA; in-laws Karen and Richard Kelliher of NH; grandchildren Corey and Christopher (Laura) Lamonica, Freddie Boehrer, Erin Levesque, Helen and Carol Conroy, and Sylvie Conroy; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his siblings Leo, Beverly, John, Maureen, Grace, Carol and Richard. Dave was a 1955 graduate of Brockton High School and to the great pride of his siblings was the first of his family to graduate from college (Bentley). Dave had a prosperous career at IBM, giving a Brockton kid of humble origins a chance to travel the world. In his spare time, he enjoyed cheering for his beloved Red Sox, practicing carpentry and other home improvement tasks, mowing the lawn while wearing black socks and dress shoes, quantifying his life in spreadsheets, and honoring his Celtic heritage. Although of Irish descent, Dave happily embraced his non-existent Scottish roots by serving as Treasurer of the Dutchess County Scottish Society. He also was a long-time officer with the Sugar and Spice Bowling League. Dave grew into his role as patriarch of a large extended clan. He was respected by friends and family for his honest advice (whether you wanted to hear it or not), his willingness to lend a hand, his role as peacemaker in disputes, and the open door he and Diane gave to people who needed a bit of kindness. He was meticulous, financially savvy, and took care of his wife and family right to the end. He worked hard his whole life, and has earned the right to sing "So fill to me the parting glass - Good night, and joy be to you all." Calling hours will be Thursday, February 25, 2016 4-8 pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Avenue Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrate Dave's life on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 10:00am St. Mary's Church, Wappingers Falls. Interment at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave's memory to Emmaus House (Albany Catholic Worker), 45 Trinity Place, Albany, NY 12202. "Go get 'em!"
