Mr. Maissel, as I called him, was one of the nicest men I’ll ever know. An IBMer of over thirty years like my father, he shared my dad’s quiet, gentlemanly demeanor and basic decency, and a sense of humor that took you by surprise. Quick with a quip but long on patience, Mr. Maissel was a delightful man whom I never saw agitated. On the contrary, he was a gentle man, a paragon of kindness who was generous with his time and knowledge and forgiving of others’ foibles. He saw what was funny in people and situations, and made me laugh with his clever puns and witty observations. I will always remember him fondly, and cherish memories of him teaching me to sail on Lake Taghkanic or karate-chopping Gerda and me playfully when we were teens. More keenly intelligent, inventive and accomplished than most people, he was nevertheless humble and self-effacing. Like my father, Mr. Maissel was compact in stature but will always tower over other men in my memory. I cried upon learning he had passed away, and I extend my sincere condolences to the Maissel family on such a huge loss.

In 1995, Leon and I were in the patent bar prep class together. I so enjoyed getting to know him then. What an intelligent, kind, funny man he was. He will be remembered fondly by so many who were blessed to have known and loved him. Love and prayers to the whole family.
