Obituary of Dorothy Still

Dorothy Elizabeth Still, 89, of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Wingate @ Dutchess. A local resident all of her life, Dorothy was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on May 25, 1926, the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Dean. She was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School. Dorothy married the late Stanley G. Still, former Town of Poughkeepsie Superintendent of Highways, on June 29, 1946 at St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie. He predeceased her on July 19, 1986. They enjoyed many happy years together. Dorothy was a member of St. Peter's Church and a former member of the Republican Committee of the Town of Poughkeepsie. Dorothy was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren and baby great grandson. She delighted in her granddaughters and took particular pride when her grandson, Jeffrey, became a member of the New York State Police. The family and extended family spent many happy hours in her company, laughing at her stories, helping her shop and enjoying her own version of traditional home cooked meals. Dorothy also enjoyed doing ceramics and was an avid animal lover, taking in many rescues over the years. Dorothy is survived by her son Stanley G. Still, former Town of Poughkeepsie Police Chief and daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Still, of Hyde Park, NY, her grandchildren Catherine and Micah Robinson of Arkansas, Cara and Richard Romanowskyj of Arkansas, Jeffrey and Danielle Still of Pleasant Valley, NY, and great grandson, Brendan Daniel Still. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Patricia Still, several nieces and nephews and Nate, her cat, who is being well cared for. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son, John "Jack" Still, former Town of Poughkeepsie Superintendent of Highways, in November, 2005 and her sister and lifelong companion, Rita Bruno, in February, 2016. The family would like to thank the staff of Wingate @ Dutchess for their compassionate care. Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 29, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish and burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.
