Obituary of Martin Rising

"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." On September 18, 2016, Martin Nicholas Rising, age 84, went home to be with the Lord. Brought into this world on January 29, 1932, he was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York. He remained living in Poughkeepsie throughout his entire life. Born to Anna Julia Rising (Beverland) and Morgan Harold Rising. He had four older brothers who all passed away far too young: William (World War 2 Veteran), Robert (World War 2 Veteran), Morgan, and Samuel. Although he struggled with leaving us, we also know how much Marty looked forward to being reunited with his parents and brothers. We hope his reunion with them was all he had imagined it would be. He was 19 years old when he was drafted into the Army, but chose to join the Navy. He was on active duty during the Korean War and would later share with us many stories from that time in his life. He served 4 years and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was a factory worker for most of his life, but retired as a security guard from Vassar College in 1994. Marty was not one to sit still for long. He was constantly moving around, working on something around the house, or inventing some sort of contraption. We lovingly joke about the 'extra lock' on the front door, made of rubber string that would take a good 5 minutes to unwind. We also remember with great laughter and pride, 2 days before his open heart surgery in July of 2013, he was fixing the roof of his home. When he was not on the move, he enjoyed watching his favorite show 'The Price is Right', a boxing match, or the religious channel. Marty is survived by many family members who loved him and admired him dearly. The love of his life, Carmen Rising. In his own words, she was "the best thing that ever happened to me." She shared his sentiments equally. They were married on June 20, 1981, celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary earlier this year. In total, they were together for 41 years. Their love for one another was always one of our greatest examples of faith and togetherness. By each other side, like most moments in their lives together, they became Born Again Christian's in 1976. He is also survived by his sister, Anna Davis. His children: Carol Rising Scott, Martin Rising, Linda Rising Harrell, and Cyndie Rising. His stepchildren: John Keelyn, Donna Kellerhouse, Tammy Litwinenko, and Marggie Pollack. Between Marty and Carmen, their family grew even further with 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. As a family, we will continue to share his favorite stories and rejoice in our memories of him. Although he may be gone, he will live on forever in our hearts.
