Obituary of Paul Gregory

Paul Peter Gregory, 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, October 10, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Albany, NY, on January 9, 1925, to Paul and Ida Gregory, Paul was a longtime resident of Wantagh, NY, and Rifton, NY. Shortly before joining the Marine Corps at age 17, he met his wife, Agnes (Hayter), with whom he shared over 70 years of marriage. Paul proudly served his country during World War II in the Marine Corps 5th Division in Japan and Bougainville Island. He always enjoyed sharing numerous stories about his experiences with his family and friends. Paul worked for over 40 years as a Plant Superintendent with Abbe Engineering in Greenpoint, NY, until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Wantagh Morton and Adonai Masonic Lodges, as well as the Marine Corp League - Sunrise (Massapequa) and Ulster Detachments. He volunteered many years running tours for the Maritime Museum in Kingston and greatly enjoyed playing the Innkeeper at the Rondout Lighthouse for Halloween. He was involved with the Marine Corps League Commitment to Kids in Ulster County. He and his wife spent a majority of their retired life enjoying trips and other adventures with the Esopus Seniors, where he served as President for several years. Together Paul and Agnes, who survives at home, raised their family - son, Paul (Kate) Gregory, of Arizona; daughter, Janet (Jim) Vilardi, Pleasant Valley; and son, Kenneth (Julie) Gregory, of South Carolina. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren - Scott (Somer), Jan-Michael, and Bradley Gregory; Jennifer (Vinnie) Colucci; Christopher (Nicole) Vilardi; Nikole (Kevin) Lark; Kaitlyn (Chris) Arrowood; and nine great-grandchildren - Connor, Miranda and Hannah Gregory; Marisa, Michaela, Jase and Ariana Colucci; Ryleigh Gregory and Channing Lark. Paul will be missed by many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Louis. It was very meaningful to Paul that he and his wife, Agnes, were able to continue living their lives together. The family wishes to thank the staff at Putnam Ridge for their attentive care during Paul's final months of life. Memorial donations can be made to the Maritime Museum, 86 Rondout Landing, Kingston, NY 12401, or to Commitment to Kids, c/o Marine Corps League, Ulster Detachment, 339 Hasbrouck, Kingston, NY 12401.
