I met Fred in the 1970s while I coached wrestling at Ketcham High. Fred was the proud father of an Arlington wrestler. As luck would have it, I coached modified soccer at PMS in the late '80s and 'early '90s. What a great man to work for and with!!! He was old school, tough, but fair. He was a straight shooter and a compassionate administrator. If I remember correctly, he was having surgery so he could go skiing. After Fred retired, it was easy to see and feel the void left at the top job. Tough act to follow and nobody could do it better. Not even close!
Fred, your service to education was a shining light. You were the mortar that held that school together. I appreciated your advice as you mentored me about how to handle certain situations with kids on the team. You knew their hot buttons because you got next to them mentally. Heaven is an even better place because you're up there handling this or planning that or helping some new kid on the block of those streets paved with gold. A fitting ending to a golden career and life. Thanks for being a part of my life.

Mr. Hanlon was a dear friend to my mom. She had 7 kids, first 4 boys who were older and always getting into trouble! Needless to say, him n my parents had become first name basis friends through the 70's! So many remember him as the sweet principal, always with a sparkle in his eyes n a kind smile. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him since I was a student (over 35 yrs ago), but my heart is saddened to hear of his passing. My prayers go out to all his loved ones n he will be missed. God bless n be strong.

I will fondly remember you as the "Greatest PrinciPAL" that ever ruled over the Poughkeepsie Middle School. I was a student from 1985-1988 and had the honor of starring with you and your colleagues in Anna Friedli's " On the Radio"... Those were the good ol days....RIP Mr. Hanlon.....

We were very fortunate to have known Fred and his family for many years. He was one of the really good guys and we will sorely miss him. We used to call him the "Energizer" bunny because he was so athletic and active and lived and loved life to the fullest. He lived at least '9" lives! Fred had a great smile, wonderful sense of humor and was the "Mayor" of GORE Mountain. It was a privilege to spend many fun hours at Chatiemac with Fred and all who loved him.

I was so sad to hear of Fred's passing and immediately had a rush of memories from my time at Poughkeepsie middle school with Fred at the helm. He was my first Principal and in many ways the best I have had in my ongoing career. The one great gift he gave us all was treating his school like a family and caring about each and every individual who worked there as well as making a difference for the students in our care.
I laugh at the memories the good times spent at celebrations and parties (many in Fred's backyard). We had fun when he and Dolores (who I am sure is welcoming him home right now) joined the "new" teachers at our "Gidget house" or over a few drinks in a bar. I also reflect on the things I learned from him about teaching, learning, and education. He knew how to treat everyone with respect and dignity and how to really have fun in the work. His retirement party alone was an event that stands out as great fun.
I was amazed by the sheer number of wonderful things that were being shared about him on social media today. This is a true tribute to his life and the way he touched the hearts of all who crossed his path. I send my deepest sympathy to all his family and friends. I wish I was not on the other side of the world so I could attend the celebration of his life. But, know that I am there with you in thoughts and spirit. I pray that all who knew him with find comfort in the sharing of stories and the fun of his life. He truly lived and gave to all. Surely there is a wonderful celebration going on in heaven for a life well lived.

I had the good fortune to finally experience what I heard others consistently comment about Fred when he worked as a sub principal in my school. I was in awe of his quiet presence and efficiency around children and the staff. He was indeed an extraordinary man. My condolences to his family and partner.
