Obituary of Joanna Papastrat
Joanna Papastrat, 89, of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away peacefully on September 1st, 2017, sustained in her final weeks by her Greek Orthodox Christian faith and the love of her family.
Joanna was born on April 4, 1928, to the late Erasmia Antonakos and the late Constantine Antonakos in Baltimore, MD. Her family soon moved to Poughkeepsie, NY, where Joanna lived out her life, marrying the late George Papastrat, and raising her children.
After graduating from Poughkeepsie High School, Joanna went on to graduate from the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City, where she perfected her natural talent for art, design and fashion. Joanna put her artistic talent to use when working at Western Printing in Poughkeepsie in the illustration department.
From the time of her youth, Joanna remained dedicated to her Greek Orthodox Church (“Kimisis Tis Theotokou”) community in Poughkeepsie, serving in the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society philanthropic organization, and singing in the Church choir, including her five years as a soloist.
Joanna also served as the office manager of the Church’s Hellenic Center, where she helped to design the beautiful ballroom that would be used to host countless Church events and receptions. Joanna further served the Church with her artistic talents, creating the illustrations used to promote the Church’s Greek Festival.
Many in the Poughkeepsie area will remember Joanna for her work at the Up-To-Date clothing store, where her eye for fashion, warm and endearing personality, and her desire to connect with people, came together so beautifully.
Joanna was an elegant and graceful woman who genuinely cared for others and was passionate about her faith, family and friends.
She is survived by her loving sister, Stemi Gorman of Poughkeepsie, daughter Dana Argiropoulos of Poughkeepsie, son Jon Papastrat (and his wife Ann) of Atlanta, GA, and her grandchildren Yani Argiropoulos, Christopher Argiropoulos and Dean Papastrat.
