So sorry to have learned of the passing of Melina. Her obituary left out the fact that for many years she was the chief editor at the SDNews, and managed what became a spectacular local newspaper under her leadership and example. She assured broad coverage of local happenings -- and the most thorough and fair coverage of Wappingers Central School District events. If John Jay High School has a "wall of fame," let's be sure to add her to it. Sweet, generous person. Too sad that we have lost her.

I am so saddened to hear of Melina's passing and just read about it in the SDN. I work for the WCSD and first met Melina when I worked at District Office. She always had a smile on her face, an upbeat attitude, and the ability to make you laugh. During the time she worked for the SDN she covered many events at the school where I work. She took pride in the happenings in and around the Wappingers district and the local community and always made an effort to cover as many events as possible. It was so evident that she enjoyed her job. When she left the SDN and went to work for BOCES, I had the good fortune to run into her again. I had truly missed seeing her around the WCSD district and was happy to have even a brief encounter with her. She was a lovely lady and I will always remember her fondly. My condolences to her family and dear friends.

My wife and I have been away visiting family and I just read about Melina's passing in the SDN (7/11/18).I believe we first met when Iwas principal at Wappingers Junior High and Melina covered the school. She was one of the biggest supporters we had despite the feelings and pressures of the SDN ownership. I moved to John Jay and then to Central Office but always kept bumping into Melina. In my retirement I met Melinna at the Pleasant Vallet Library book sale and the Boardman Road weekly book sales. With a big smile on her face and a ready one liners, she always would be amazed at seeing me buying books. She always had a smile and I always felt better after seeing her. I am truly sorry that I wasn't here to pay my respects. She was a beautiful person and I will miss not seeing her.

I am shocked and so saddened that Melina has passed. She was such a vibrant person, so happy to be with people and do her job. While she was at the Southern Dutchess News, she always gave us in the drama club the best coverage. She was so supportive of our program. She was proud to have graduated from the district, and seemed always pleased to report all our accomplishments. I was very sorry when she left the SDN and moved on to another job. I regret that I could not get to the wake to express my condolences in person. About a year ago, I bumped into Melina while out shopping. She was with her birth mother and introduced us and explained the circumstances of her reunion. She was so happy. My lasting memory of her will be matched with the picture you have posted here-of her very happy smile.
I am so sorry for your loss. It is a really big loss.

I was so sorry to read of Melina's passing. I knew her when she was the Editor of The Southern Dutchess News & The Beacon Free Press. I have done voluntary Media Relations work for a number of area organizations through the years & would submit Press Releases to her. She always went above & beyond to ensure that all received equal consideration. She was a consummate professional and will be missed. My prayers & condolence to you at a most difficult time.
Sincerely,
Susan E. MacDonald

Sad to hear Melina passed away. I first met Melina in early 90's when she covered my Town's meetings for the Southern Dutchess News newspaper. She was a fun gal to tease in a good way. I use to to forward to chatting with her about political happenings and never would she take sides either conservative or liberal with me. me being Conservative, she would roll her eyes and crack a smile instead. A deep thinker and a fair and honest news reporter something not to often seen these days. Rest In Peace Melina! God Bless.

Melina was a treasure! I chaired a PTA Fine Arts Competition in my children's schools for many years. I always looked for judges for our entries who did not know the children personally. Melina was always a willing volunteer judge. Not only did she choose winning entries, but she would often write personal notes to the students, giving them praise and constructive criticism. What a beautiful and encouraging person! I thank God for her example of serving others with joy and for her impact in the lives of so many. I will be praying for her family - for peace and grace and comfort during this time of loss. Blessings to you!

To the Family of Melina:
I am a teacher at Riccardi Elementary School in the Saugerties Central School District. Melina and I spoke often during the events she covered at our school. She was a truly kind person and had an "eye" for choosing the right pictures and the right words for our district news letter. I will truly miss her at all of our events. I am very sorry for you loss. Sincerely, Sue Rinaldi, 2nd Grade Teacher, Riccardi School, Saugerties, NY
