Obituary of Eugene E. Marquardt
Eugene Everett Marquardt, 93, of Poughkeepsie, went to home to God on Friday, July 20, 2018 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in upstate NY, the only child of Rose and Ivan Marquardt. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Army and served his country in Europe in WW II as a member of the 104th Timberwolves division, receiving the Purple Heart for injuries incurred during the war. He returned home and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1946 he married his one and only love, Mary, who predeceased him in 2016, after 69 years of marriage. Gene began his electrical engineering career in Virginia, with NASA. They moved to Poughkeepsie in 1955 where he continued his career with IBM, finishing it in 1980 with 25 years of service, after which they spent many happy hours together traveling throughout the US and Canada in their camper.
Gene was a devoted father to their two children Donna Marquardt (Poughkeepsie) and Bryan Marquardt (Karen) (Ulster Park) and was a loving Grandpa to Haylie Marquardt, and Bradley Marquardt (both of Ulster Park). Gene was an avid outdoorsman and was happiest on family vacations spent camping in the Adirondacks, hiking, fishing and boating. He was also a lifelong learner and took many adult education courses in diverse topics such as Russian, oil painting, and guitar. He was a lifelong musician playing the clarinet, saxophone, piano, accordion, guitar, and harmonica. He delighted in photographing the outdoors, family gatherings and events, and making home movies. He served as a Cub Scout co-leader along with his wife and a dance recital Dad for sound engineering. He was a ham radio operator, a member of the Dutchess County Civil Air Patrol, the American Legion, the New Hamburg Seaplane Club, and a Volunteer at Castle Point VA. A parishioner of St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, he served in the men’s group, bingo fundraising, and in many other capacities where he was always willing to lend a hand. His favorite belief was that anything worth doing was worth doing well and everything he undertook in his lifetime was a testimony to that belief.
The family wants to thank Dr. John Keene, the staff of the ICU, and Respiratory Unit Circle 4 at the Vassar Brothers Medical Center for their love and care of Gene during the last weeks of his life.
