Obituary of Karen Faulding Sorlie

Karen Faulding-Sorlie was born in Queens, New York on February 6, 1966 to Laura and Edward Faulding. She grew up in Queens and later moved to Brooklyn, NY. A life-long learner Karen excelled in school and graduated from Norman Thomas High School in 1984. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pace University in 1988. While at Pace, she joined the Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Kapa Alpha Sorority Incorporated in 1985. She went on to earn a Master's degree in Education from Baruch College.

In 2002, Karen met the love of her life, her husband, John Sorlie. After dating for a year, they married in October 2003.  Karen was particularly proud of becoming an instant grandmother. A year after getting married, the couple moved from Brooklyn to Poughkeepsie. Karen and John had a wonderful marriage and were surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Karen loved opening her heart and home to her “one, big, happy” family that meant the world to her.

Karen had a successful career in finance and accounting working for a wide range of companies in the advertising and media industry.  She was the Associate Director of Finance for Carat USA, a global advertising agency located in New York City. She loved going to wine festivals, wineries, and antique shopping in Brimfield with her beloved husband John.  Also, an avid gardener, Karen enjoyed spending time in her garden.  She took great pride watching her vegetables, herbs and plants transform from simple seeds into miraculous plants each year. Karen even found a way to combine her love of wine and passion for gardening – by starting her own blog called "Gardens and Wine" www.gardensandwine.com .  She loved posting pictures of her plants and flowers, as well as sharing her extensive knowledge of wine and food pairing suggestions.

In 2016, Karen re-connected with her AKA family - becoming an active member of her beloved sorority’s graduate chapter Iota Alpha Omega.   She enjoyed her work with the Iota Alpha Omega and was always finding new ways to help and support both her community and her fellow Sorors.

Karen Faulding-Sorlie passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the age of 52.  She is survived by: her husband John Sorlie; mother, Laura Faulding; brother, Thomas Faulding ( his wife Carol); nephew, Brandon  and niece, Ashley ; John Sorlie’s children - Michele ( her husband Seth), Eric ( his partner Chris), Beth ( husband Albert); and her five beloved grandchildren, AJ, Rebecca, Sarah, Emily and Isabel, her two sisters in law,  Lisa Sorlie  and Linda Ferraro (her husband Richard) and several nieces and nephews.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Karen Faulding-Sorlie’s name to The Mid Hudson Ivy Foundation, PO Box 1848, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Services are scheduled for: Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Thomas Doyle Funeral Homes, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 and on Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Community Baptist Church Family Life Center, 859 Hendrix St., Brooklyn, NY 11201.
