Dear Nancy, I am so sorry for your loss. I was fortunate to work with John while he was teaching at NYU. I remember him as a dedicated faculty and advisor, committed to his students’ success. I remember how we would often debrief after sitting through another infuriating meeting. I always enjoyed listening to his reasoned and logical thinking along with his funny comments about the issue at hand. My deepest sympathy to you and all the family.

Dear Nancy, I am so sorry for your loss, one which all of us who knew him share. John was a smart and dedicated teacher, an outstanding advisor and mentor, a passionate advocate of the liberal arts, and a funny and caring person. We worked together regularly when he taught at NYU, and so I witnessed at close hand the strength of his convictions and the depths of his commitment to issues of academic standards. His clear thinking, lucid arguments, and reasoned analysis were always appreciated and valued, even by those who disagreed with him. His endearing inability to hide his true feelings often resulted in hilarious moments that punctuated serious academic meetings; I once had to extract a promise from him to never again throw pencils to vent his (understandable) frustration with bureaucratic inanities. I will always remember John fondly as a colleague, a friend, and a great guy. It saddens me to think that such a vibrant presence has been lost. My deepest sympathy goes out to you and to the rest of his family.

Dear Nancy,
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I was looking at pictures of my short time at Vassar and you and John were in so many of the photos. It brought back so many wonderful memories of games played in my little apartment and all the laughter we shared. I remember when you moved into the same apartment and John revealed himself to be "Farmer John," planting a garden around the house. I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now. John was a wonderful person and I was so happy that you found each other. With much love and gratitude for all the happy times you and John shared with me. I'll be keeping a good thought for you.
