They say that friendship is built upon shared values, but probably more importantly, shared experiences. The latter is certainly true of my friendship with Bill. He crewed on my sailboat, At Last, at Chelsea Yacht Club, for many, many years. He always came if I was racing on Sundays, even though this was his only day off. His smile, energy, and enthusiasm/love for sailing were infectious. In addition to sailing, he was always cooking something at home after the Sunday afternoon race, and as you all know, he loved gardening and flowers.
I really can’t envision sailing without him. As Steve Smith, another every Sunday crewmember wrote: “So Terrible, I can’t believe it, like losing a family member.”
Rest in peace Bill. We will somehow carry on without you, but our world will never be the same.
