During the decades that Bill and I taught together at Arlington there were many years that we had either the same prep period or the same lunch period and so I got to know him well. Most of that time in the downstairs faculty room (of the old building) was spent laughing. He was a sprite with a huge spirit! Bright! Optimistic! Kind! Generous! Fun and Funny! Sometimes a student or a football player who wanted to see him would knock on the door, and when the student asked to see Mr. Dillon, Bill would yell out humorously, “It’s Coach Dillon! Coach Dillon! How many times do I have to tell you this?” We’d all laugh! Of course Bill never got up to answer the door because he was stretched out on the faculty room sofa taking what he called his “five minute Kennedy.”
We used to tease him about his napping and his smoothing out his tie (a must!!!) before he nodded off, and I told him that he should be called “Couch Dillon.”
So...I would say Rest In Peace, Bill, but I know that resting would never be in your game plan. But I will say that you brought joy and direction and laughter to a lot of us. Surely and sorely missed. Thankful for being on the planet when you were - the sentiment of so many of us!

This Coach Dillon story goes back to the fall of 2002. He had just come to FDR to run our offense, I’m guessing because he felt bad for beating up on us for years while at Arlington. We typically practiced on our “practice field” which was more of a dirt incline with an upright but because our athletic department ordered the wrong top soil when resurfacing our game field, our conditioning, for weeks, was picking up rocks. On one particular day we had to wait for a tech teacher to finish playing with a bow and arrow on the field. The teacher was trying to hit a target at 100 yards. Before he packed up the teacher came up to us and asked if anyone wanted to try. Coach Dillon looked around and said something along the lines of f-it I’ll try. I’m not sure if this was an act or not but he needed help nocking the bow. Anyway, he got the thing set, pointed it up in the air and released. We’re all watching fully expecting to land 30 or 40 yards short but it keeps going and going and going. Not only did he hit the target, he popped the balloon on the bullseye. I’m not sure what his 40 time was in 2002 but that shot definitely took a few seconds off of it. He was flying around that field. It’s something I’ll never forget.
Prior to that season we hadn’t won a game in three years. We didn’t win the section, we didnt even make the playoffs but because of Coach Dillon and his spread offense, won 3 games and were competitive in all of them. I truly appreciate the impression he left all the passion knowledge he shared. RIP coach.

My best prayers to Bill's family and friends....I got to know Bill when I was an assistant football coach at Red Hook Central and I would bring our players down to his mid hudson camp at New Paltz, then in Poughkeepsie....He was so generous and gracious and we would have great discussions about football and during that time attending that camp against bigger schools made us a tougher and more competitive team in our division. He did not care about anything else other then giving players from all over the area an avenue to get better at their sport, too be coached by great coaches and more importantly to have those coaches like me who worked the camp instill integrity and dedication and good values upon those players.
RIP...

My thoughts and prayers go out to Bill's family. In addition to his prowess as a football coach and teacher Bill was a co-founder and for nearly twenty years meet director of the Arlington Invitational Relays, recognized as one of the top high school track and field meets in New York State. He positively touched so many lives and will be fondly remembered.

I know of no better coach or person than Bill Dillon. He was a smart, sensible, tough and kind man all at the same time. He knew and did what one had to do to succeed and he shared that knowledge and those skills with so many. Add generous to the list above as I can't think of anything he might of done that was a selfish pursuit. He did it for the family, for the students, for the players, for the community. If or when he found satisfaction in his accomlishments it was expressed in gratitude for having been part of something bigger than himself. The lessons were delivered in the context of football for me. Those lessons go with me decades after and so far beyond the field of play. My condolences to all who knew, and therefore, love him. My condolences especially go to the Dillon Family and the fraternity of teachers/coaches he called his closest friends.

Coach Dillon was an amazing man. I know I wouldn’t be the man I am today without his leadership and guidance. I can’t even imagine the number of immature boys that were molded into responsible respectful men because of Coach Dillon. He turned me into athlete. He turned me into an academic. The lessons he taught me are being handed down to my children and I’m sure the children of many others. He will be missed.

We are so saddened and heart broken to learn of Bill's passing. To Sue, Jenn, Mike, and Laura, and all of your families, our deepest and sincere condolences go to you. Beside being neighbors, I had Bill as a teacher in high school and I can so easily say that he was such a great teacher and inspiring. So kind and positive and you could tell he loved teaching and cared for his students. He always had a smile each and every day. We lovingly used to call him Mr. D. because the "new" show Happy Days had their own Mr C., so we named him Mr. D. The world lost a good one, the best! Such a kind person. My heart goes out to his family. Love and hugs to you all. Beth and Mark Phillips

From the very first day we coached together and Bill let me drive his Triumph and I knew it was the beginning of a great friendship. We coached together in both Arlington and at Lourdes and in each of those opportunities we had great athletes with whom we had great success. Bill was a master coach. He understood better than anyone I knew the concept of execution. He required excellence when a play was run in practice and believed that what we did in practice we would do in games. Consequently Bill's team's were always winners. Our friendship extended far beyond the football field as we shared family joys and sorrows. We buried parents and felt the joy at our kids' weddings. I remember frequent scouting trips to Saugerties as well as games at Shea Stadium where Bill had "just two beers." Running together on the beach at Sag Harbor, and watching our kids swim in my pool. Before each game we coached at Arlington we had to first stop at Nor-Anns' for our obligatory ham and eggs. Every year Bill and I would bet on all the college bowl games as well as the pro games. This provided endless fun and we both looked forward to it. It is hard for me to watch a game on TV now, with out wanting to Call Bill as we both dissected some poor coaching decision. I might add that both Bill and I were undefeated while sitting at home. I told Bill once that I would remember the laughter, and so I do. Both Sue and I are heartbroken and send our love to, Sue, Jenny , Alex, Laura , Dana , Mike and Jennifer. May his memory be a blessing.

Mr. Dillon was my teacher sometime between 1964-1968 at Arlington High School. He was one of the most energetic, enthusiastic, compassionate, and knowledgeable educators to enter the education system. We will miss you Mr. Dillon. May you rest in peace. I offer my prayers and sincere condolences to the Dillon family at this time.
