Obituary of Janet A. Kanwit

Janet Anderson Kanwit, 79, of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away peacefully on January 14, 2021 at home, surrounded by her family.  Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on November 28, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Annie Cameron Heim.  Janet was a graduate of FDR High School class of 1959 and became a Registered Nurse.  She began her education receiving her Diploma of Nursing at Saint Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, NYC (1961); her BA from Marist College (1975), her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Mt. Saint Mary College (1977), her MA in Community Counseling & Psychology from Marist College (1980) and her M. Ed in Nursing Administration from Columbia University (1983).  Janet had worked over the years as a Supervisor for Intensive and Coronary Care Units at Vassar Brothers Hospital, as Director of Quality Improvement & Risk Management at Kingston Hospital, as Vice President of Quality & Risk Management at Community Hospital in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and as a Hospital Nursing Services Consultant for NYS Dept. of Health in New Rochelle, NY.  Her latest employment was as a Legal Nurse Consultant for Anderson Resources in Poughkeepsie and as a Licensed Real Estate Broker for Weichert Realtors in LaGrangeville, NY.  On March 10, 1970, Janet married Dr. Bert Kanwit in Poughkeepsie and they were married for 35 years prior to his passing in January 2005.  They met while working together at Vassar Hospital.  She was a member of the Cross Court Tennis Club and Dutchess Golf Club.  In addition to tennis and golf, she enjoyed skiing, reading, hiking, gardening, and ballroom dancing.  Janet is survived by her daughter, Dana Kanwit Newsom and son-in-law, Ray Newsom, of Pleasant Valley, and her two grandchildren, Mia and Jake Newsom.  Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2021 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at the Timothy P.
