Mary was the salt of the earth. I worked with her for many years while at Vassar. She was one of the kindest persons I have known. Her smile made you smile. We often spoke about her beloved Ed, mostly about golf. We both loved the game. May she be at peace with Ed and live in the hearts of all that had the pleasure of knowing her. My sincere condolences to her family.

Mary was more than just the Administrative Assistant for the Classics Dept. She was a good-will ambassador, counsellor, facilitator, trouble-shooter, and most of all trusted friend to the hundreds of students and many faculty with whom she interacted at Vassar. Her kindness was available to everyone as was her willingness to help whatever the problem--even if, as in our case, she was asked to look after our five-year old daughter while our son was being born. Mary delighted in children and was a wonderful mother and doting grandmother to Kris and Haley Rose. Wherever and whenever you encountered Mary, her radiant smile and gentle words of encouragement made your day a little brighter. That is how we remember her and always will. Rob and Diana Brown

A world without Mary Decker is lessened: she was warm, smart, hardworking. My awareness of her was via Vassar College and that was where I saw her most. She seemed to know everyone, was cordial to all, had a maternal affect towards students, and, truth be told, kept the wheels on for every office she served in. If the question was 'How does one do...', 99 times out of a hundred she knew the answer. I hadn't realized she just lost Ed: two people, one team,
theirs was a couple to draw reassurance from. I will miss not having the possibility of running into her, the NJ shore will miss her annual presence. A good, good woman, may she rest in peace.
