Obituary of Ferris G. Rugar
Ferris G Rugar, 88, passed peacefully on August 11th, 2021, at his home in Lagrangeville. Born on October 23rd, 1932, Ferris was one of 18 children of Edward and Gladys Rugar, both deceased. On July 4th, 1952, he married his one true love, Jeanette Schaller. They spent 52 wonderful years together before her passing in 2004.
Ferris was a lifelong resident of Dutchess County. Many knew him from his time as a Coca Cola distributor from the 1940s through the 1980s. He and his wife were avid bowlers and for many years managed their own local league team. Many others would recognize him from the many days he could be seen shopping at the Beekman Stop & Shop, and at Frankies in Hopewell. And still others would recognize him from Kelly’s Steak & Spirits, where for several years he would greet and seat people.
An avid gardener for many years, and a prolific baker in his later life, the gourds and pumpkins he grew brought great joy to his children and grandchildren. His baked goods were coveted by many locals, as he’d hand them out freely during his nights at Kelly’s. Everyone knew him as a man quick to smile and crack a joke. He’d always get a smile from children with his antics.
Ferris was predeceased by his beloved wife Jeanette Rugar, and two sons – Joel & David Rugar. He was also predeceased by 13 of his siblings: Mary Grant, Estelle Doughty, Gladys Bennett, Susan Rugar, George A. Rugar, Sr. Edward Rugar, Robert Rugar, Richard Rugar, Harold Rugar, Ronald Rugar, Allan Rugar, Donald Rugar, and Thomas Rugar. Of his surviving siblings, there is his sister Christine Rugar, brothers Dave Rugar, John Rugar, and Ray Rugar.
He is survived by his sons Ferris Rugar Jr, Frederick Rugar, and Corey Rugar, as well as his daughter Jolene. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, many of whom are local residents as well.
Ferris Rugar will be greatly missed by his friends and family, as well as by his local community. In memorial to him, a celebration of his life will be held at the Mid County Rod & Gun Club in LaGrangeville NY on August 22nd from 1PM to 5PM. The gun club is located at 650 Waterbury Hill Rd, LaGrangeville NY 12540.
