Obituary of Timothy Joseph Shanley

Timothy Joseph Shanley, age 83, of town of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie NY.  Timothy was born September 22, 1937 in Troy, NY.  He was the son of the late Francis Shanley and the late Clare (Ketrick) Shanley. He was a graduate of Catholic High School in Troy, NY, as well as the Hudson Valley Technical Institute. He was employed at IBM in Poughkeepsie as a test engineer for over 30 years. Timothy was proud to be an American and enjoyed politics, current events and history. He was an active member of Crum Elbow Sportsman's Association in Hyde Park, and enjoyed deer hunting. He especially loved all things technical, from automobiles, planes and trains to the weather.  He liked to fix and build things, including adding an entire second story to his home to accommodate his large family.

He married the late Mary Ann Korin on August 21, 1960 at St Nicholas Ukranian Catholic Central Church in Watervliet, NY.  Timothy was a devoted husband to his wife Mary Ann for over 60 years, and together they were local residents of the town of Poughkeepsie for almost that long as well.  He was a father of six and grandfather of 14, and he and Mary Ann also raised their grand daughter, Lori Shanley of Boston MA.   As a retiree, Timothy drove a school bus for 17 years for the Arlington School District.  Timothy loved vacations with his family, especially to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Adirondacks, Hawaii, Panama and Ireland.

Timothy is survived by four daughters and two sons:  Eileen (Shanley) McAliney and her husband Jim McAliney of Malvern, PA; Timothy M. Shanley and his wife Darlene (Barbera) of Orange, CT; Colleen Shanley and her life partner, the late Brian Dunn of Kingston, NY; Karen (Shanley) Whitehead and her husband Carl Whitehead of Poughkeepsie, NY; Jean Shanley and her husband Michael Colatrella of Sacramento, CA, and Dr. David Shanley, MD. of Hermiston, OR.  

Grandchildren include: Maureen, James, Erin and Brendan McAliney; Amanda (Shanley) Thompson, Nicholas, Sarah and Kristen Shanley; Lori Shanley; Lauren, Adam and Mikaela Whitehead; Anna and Jonathan Colatrella.

Timothy is also survived by two sisters, and four brothers as well as many more nieces and nephews.

Sisters include Patricia (Shanley) Flood and her husband Carl Flood of Glens Falls, NY; Ellen (Shanley) Brady and her late husband Tom Brady of Basking Ridge, NJ; and the late Clare (Shanley) Micarelli, and her husband John Micarelli, of Mount Holly, NJ.

Brothers include his twin brother Thomas Shanley and his wife Nancy (Smith) Shanley of Myrtle Beach, SC; Paul Shanley and his wife Janet (Misasi) Shanley of Poughkeepsie, NY;  William Shanley and his wife Linda (Palmer) Shanley of Hudson Falls, NY;  Lawrence Shanley and his wife Marica (Welch) Shanley of Peru, NY and the late Francis Shanley and his wife Phyllis (Whittaker) of  Booneville, IN. 

Calling hours will be Tuesday, August 24, 2021 from 10:00am-Noon at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY.   The funeral mass will be held at 12:30pm on the same day at Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY.  Burial will be immediately following at St. Peters Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
